Your first session

The first hour is about rapport and fit, not paperwork.

You are not being processed. We talk, you find out what I am like, and you leave knowing whether you want to come back.

01

Getting there

Text or call (812) 760-5528, send the contact form with your name, number and the days that work, or book online.

Sessions are by video anywhere in Indiana or Illinois. There is no in-person option; the practice is telehealth only.

What the hour is actually for

Rapport. Not chit chat, and not a checklist read aloud at you. A real conversation about what brought you in and what you want to be different.

I am also assessing fit honestly in both directions. Can you stand being direct with me, and am I the right person for what you are carrying.

If the answer is no, I will say so in that hour and help you find someone better suited. That is not a failed session. It is the reason the first hour exists.

Fear is part of the process. Any time we move from something we know to something we don't, fear is present.

03

Nerves are expected

Most people are uncomfortable walking in, and men who did not want to come are usually the most uncomfortable of all. That is normal and it passes fast once we are talking.

You are not obligated to open the worst thing on day one. You keep the say over pacing.

Only one kind of person goes to therapy. Courageous people go to therapy. Making the call was the hard part.

04

The practical side

Self-pay only. I do not take insurance, and I provide the out-of-network superbill you need if you want to file with your plan.

There is a 48 hour cancellation policy. Inside that window the session is charged, because the hour was held for you.

Ask any fee question directly by phone before you schedule.

05

The order it happens in

First, the scheduling conversation and the paperwork link. You complete the forms before the session, not in it, so the hour stays yours.

Second, on the day, you get a link. You click it a few minutes early and land in a video session. There is no lobby, no receptionist and no drive.

Third, the first few minutes are housekeeping: confirming where you are physically sitting that day, since licensure follows your location, and a number to reach you on if the connection drops.

Fourth, the hour itself, which is mostly you talking and me asking. Near the end we cover what you want to be different and whether the two of us are a fit. Then scheduling, if you want a next one.

06

What to have ready

A door that closes, and an hour where nobody needs you. A parked vehicle counts and is more common than you would think.

Headphones, if privacy is a factor. They help more than any other single thing.

A charged device and a connection you trust. If it is going to drop, better to know before we are twenty minutes into something.

The forms done in advance, and the name of any physician or prescriber already involved, if there is one.

One concrete example from the last two weeks. Not a summary of your life. A specific Tuesday that went the way you do not want them to go. That one example is usually worth more than an entire history.

07

After the hour

You will usually leave with one thing to pay attention to before the next session. It will be small and specific. That is on purpose.

Frequency starts weekly for most people, and we talk about spacing it out as things move. I do not give a session count in the first hour, because I would be guessing, and these issues did not get like this overnight.

Cancellation is 48 hours. Payment is self-pay, and an out-of-network superbill is available if you want to submit it yourself.

If it is not a fit, say so, or I will. Nobody has to explain themselves and I would rather point you somewhere better than keep an hour on the calendar that is not working.

Questions about this

Yourself and a rough idea of why you called. Any paperwork required gets handled around the conversation, not instead of it.

Then I will ask. That is the job. Nobody arrives with a prepared statement, and the ones who do usually put it down within ten minutes.

No. You decide at the end whether you want a second session. If we are not a fit, I will say so and point you somewhere useful.

Next step

Set up the first hour.

Call (812) 760-5528, or send the form and I will get back to you.

If calling is more than you want to do today, text.
