Couples counseling
Two people who still care and cannot get a conversation to land.
Couples counseling here is not a refereed argument. We work on the pattern the two of you run, and on the skill of having the hard conversation well.
The pattern, not the transcript
Most couples arrive wanting me to rule on the last fight. I am not going to, because the last fight is a symptom and you have had it forty times.
What matters is the shape underneath it: one of you presses, the other one withdraws, both of you interpret the other's move as proof of the worst thing you already believed.
- The same argument in different clothes, every few weeks.
- One of you narrating, the other one going silent.
- Contempt showing up in small doses, usually as sarcasm.
- Everything decided by whoever cares more that day.

Finite and infinite games
Finite games have fixed rules and they end. Someone wins, someone loses. Infinite games are not built to end. They are designed to maximize winners. Marriage, family, raising children: all infinite.
Almost every couple in trouble is playing finite inside infinite. You win the exchange and lose the week. Once you can name which game you are in, the right move gets obvious fast.
Infinite games are designed to maximize winners and never end.
What changes
CBT gives you both a way to catch the interpretation before the reaction. Almost all of the heat comes from what you concluded about your partner's motive, not from what your partner did.
Then it becomes practice. Saying the real thing at the right size. Staying in the conversation when it gets uncomfortable, which is the buffalo move and the shortest way through.
One of you can start this alone if the other is not ready. Change in one person moves the pattern.
What the room is like
Both of you are there, on video, usually from the same house and sometimes from two different ones. You each get to say the thing. I will interrupt, and it will not be to take a side.
What I am watching for is the loop, not the content. Most couples arrive convinced the argument is about the calendar, the money, the mother-in-law, the phone. The topic rotates. The sequence almost never does: one of you moves toward, the other moves away, the first moves harder, the second goes further, and by minute nine you are both running the same script you ran in 2019.
The first useful hour is usually the one where you both watch the loop happen live and can name it while it is running.
What has already failed, and why
Talking more, at eleven at night, when you are both empty. That is not communication, that is a fight with worse lighting.
Keeping the peace. This buys quiet in exchange for distance, and the interest compounds. Most couples in real trouble are not fighting much. They are polite.
Score. He kept a list, she kept a list, and both lists are accurate. That is the finite game showing up in a marriage that is an infinite one. A marriage is not designed to end with a winner, so winning an argument inside it is a strange thing to want. If your partner loses, you did not win.

Where CBT gets traction with two people
The chain runs the same way for a couple, just twice at once. She says a sentence. In under a second you interpret it as an accusation. Your chest tightens, and then you say the thing you will be apologizing for at bedtime.
The leverage here is the interpretation, because it is the only link either of you can reach in the moment. Not her tone, not your heart rate, not the twenty years of history behind both. We slow one specific exchange down and get each of you to say the interpretation out loud. Half the time, hearing it said is enough for the other person to realize they have been answering a charge nobody made.
Then you both get something to run at home, and we look at what happened with it next week.
Some things this is not for. If one of you has already decided privately and is here to be witnessed leaving, say so, because that is a different piece of work. If there is violence or fear in the house, joint sessions are not appropriate and you should call 988 or 911 if anyone is in danger.
Questions about this
No. I will be direct with both of you, which sometimes feels like taking sides for about ten minutes. I am on the side of what the two of you are building.
Sometimes it is useful. We decide that together rather than by default, and I do not keep secrets that undermine the work.
Not automatically. Some couples rebuild, some get clear that they are done. Either way, doing it honestly beats drifting.
