Stress & burnout

The load stopped resetting, and you kept carrying it.

Burnout is not weakness and it is not a scheduling problem. It is what happens when output stays high, recovery goes to zero, and the work stops meaning anything.

01

How you know

Stress is a spike. Burnout is a floor that has moved. You wake up already behind, and the day is spent paying interest on it.

The most reliable sign is cynicism arriving where competence used to be. You still do the job well and you have contempt for it, and for the people asking you to do it.

  • The weekend no longer touches it.
  • Small requests feel like insults.
  • You are efficient and you cannot remember the last thing you were proud of.
  • The people at home get whatever is left, which is not much.

02

Why gripping harder is the wrong move

More discipline is the instinct, and it is the wrong move. Get up earlier, cut out the last enjoyable thing, run a tighter system. That is running from the storm, and it buys a week.

The buffalo move is to walk at the part you have been avoiding: the conversation with your boss, the boundary you have never once held, the admission that the current arrangement does not work.

Avoiding the hard conversation is what makes the hard conversation permanent.

03

The work

We start with the standards running in the background. Most burned out people are operating under rules they never chose and have never said out loud. CBT gets those rules on the table where they can be examined.

Then we get specific about capacity. What actually has to be done by you, what has been quietly assigned to you, and what you have been doing to avoid a conversation.

The male identity is derived from competent action, and competence here is not endurance. It is deciding well and saying so clearly.

04

The week nobody sees

You are still delivering, which is exactly the problem. From the outside the output looks the same, so nothing prompts anyone to ask.

Inside, the day starts with a jolt before the alarm and a mental scroll of what is at risk. Small requests land as though they were large. You reread the same email three times. Somewhere around three in the afternoon you get a strange flat patch where you are at your desk and nothing is happening in your head at all.

Then you get home, give the family the version of you that has nothing left, and spend an hour on your phone not enjoying it. That last hour is the one people describe with the most shame, and it is the most common thing on this page.

05

What the usual fixes are actually doing

A vacation. You come back rested for four days and conclude that the problem was tiredness. It was not, and now the evidence says the system works, so nothing changes.

Better systems. New app, tighter calendar, earlier alarm. All this does is increase capacity, and capacity is the thing that got filled last time. You build a bigger container and the water rises.

And the standing one: get through this stretch, then it will ease. There has been a stretch every year for six years. That sentence is not a plan, it is a way of postponing a decision that is already overdue.

You build a bigger container and the water rises.

06

Where the leverage is with burnout

Something happens, a thought fires, the body follows, you act. With burnout the fastest thought is almost always about permission and obligation. If I do not do it, it does not get done. Saying no here will cost me. Rest has to be earned.

Those are the ones we go after, because the schedule is downstream of them. You can rearrange the calendar every quarter and it will refill in the same shape as long as the rules underneath are untouched. Most high performers are running rules they never chose and have never tested.

The other half of the work is concrete: which specific things come off, who has to be told, what the actual sentence is, and what happens after you say it. Then you report back and we look at the result rather than the fear of it.

This is not for someone looking to be told the workload is fine. It usually is not. And if the exhaustion comes with a persistent loss of interest in everything, read the depression page, because that is a different animal.

Questions about this

No. Tired is fixed by a weekend. Burnout survives the weekend, the vacation and the good night's sleep, because the load and the meaning are both off.

Most people cannot, at least not quickly. We work on what you can move: the standards you hold yourself to, what you agree to, and what you do with the hours that are actually yours.

Scheduling is worked out by phone, including telehealth options that fit around work.
