Marital dissatisfaction

You are not fighting. You are just two people running a household.

Nobody slammed a door. That is what makes this hard to name. The logistics work, the calendar works, and something between you has gone quiet.

01

How it gets here

Rarely through one event. It happens through a hundred small avoidances: the thing not said at dinner, the topic that gets steered around, the irritation swallowed because it is not worth it tonight.

Each of those is cheap on the day. Stacked up over years they become distance, and distance gets explained as personality. We just grew apart. We are different people now.

  • Conversation has narrowed to schedules, money and the kids.
  • One of you brings things up and the other one goes flat.
  • Resentment is doing the arithmetic in the background.
  • You are polite with each other, which is worse than arguing.

Finite fights inside an infinite game

Marriage is an infinite game. It is not built to end and it is designed to maximize winners. Arguments are finite games, and they end with a winner and a loser.

The damage comes from playing finite inside infinite. You win the exchange about the credit card and lose ground in the marriage. Do that enough times and there is nothing left to win.

If your partner loses, you did not win.

03

What the work looks like

We work on what actually happens between you: who moves toward, who moves away, and what each of you is protecting when it happens.

CBT gives both of you a way to catch the interpretation before the reaction. Most of the heat in a marriage comes from what people conclude about the other person's motive, not from the event itself.

Then you practice the competent version. Having the hard conversation, and having it well. That is the skill, and it is learnable.

04

What it looks like from the inside

Nobody is yelling. That is the part that makes it hard to explain to anyone.

You are efficient. You handle logistics well. You discuss the kids, the schedule, the car, the parents. You are two people running an organization together, competently, and you have not had a conversation that was about either of you in months.

Then there is the specific loneliness of being in the same room as someone and missing them. You notice it at odd times. Driving home. Watching her laugh at something on her phone that you did not get told about. Realizing you have started saving stories for people at work.

05

How it usually gets handled, and why that fails

You wait for the right moment. There is no right moment, so the waiting becomes the decision, and a year goes by.

You bring it up at the worst possible time, usually as an accusation dressed as a question, because it has been pressurized for so long that it comes out sideways. Then the fight is about how you said it and the actual subject never gets touched.

Or you keep the peace and quietly reduce your expectations. That is the most dangerous one, because it works. Distance is comfortable. It just also happens to be the last stop before somebody decides.

Waiting for the right moment is a decision. It just does not feel like one.

06

The work here, and who it is not for

The chain shows up as interpretation. She says something short. Under a second, you conclude what it meant: she is disappointed, she has checked out, I cannot get this right. The body reacts to the conclusion, and then you withdraw or you push, and she reacts to that rather than to anything you actually meant.

So the leverage is on the interpretation, and on the sentence you are not saying. We work on both. What you actually want, in plain words, without a preamble and without a case built against her. Most men have never said it out loud to anyone, including themselves, and that is usually the first hour.

It also helps to stop playing a finite game inside an infinite one. Marriage is not built to end with a winner. If your partner loses, you did not win.

This can be done alone or together, and starting alone is common. It is not for someone who wants a strategy to change their spouse without changing anything on their side. If there is fear or violence in the house, that is a different situation and 988 or 911 is the right call.

Questions about this

Yes. One person changing how they show up changes the pattern. It is not the whole answer, but it is never nothing.

No. Being right is a finite game. I am interested in what the two of you are building, which does not end when the argument does.

Say that in a session. It is hard and it is honest, and honest is the only place this work can start from.

Next step

Say the thing you have been not saying.

Call, or send the form. Either of you can make the first call.

If calling is more than you want to do today, text.
