Mike Makes It Rain

In business, with friends, in life. Literally. No worries. Well, except one…um, maybe two.

His wife is leaving and he can’t stop drinking. He drinks too much every night. He is by all accounts a great guy. No one would ever guess. Civically active, goes to church sincerely, provides for his family. He is kind and cheerful…and drinks. Damn can he drink.

Worst of all, he can’t tell anybody. What reason does he have to be unhappy? Everyone, pretty much everyone has always…always…looked up to him.

He even wonders, “what’s wrong with me? I should be happy!” While he drinks and his wife leaves.

He wonders, “am I depressed? Hell no I’m not! What do I have to be depressed about?” And he pours himself another…to celebrate.

Truth is he is depressed. Not “mentally ill,” but depressed. Something is off and he knows it. But what the hell is he supposed to do about it and who could he possibly talk to?

You see, Mike has always been successful. From early on. And people loved him for it…especially his dad. His dad is so proud of him, tells everyone about his son. For every goal he has acheived they’ve loved him more. Do they love him or his accomplishments, he wonders. What? That’s stupid! There’s no difference. He is what he has accomplished.

Johnny Cash chillingly sang before his death, “what have I become, my sweetest friend? everyone I know goes away in the end…you could have it all my empire of dirt. I will let you down. I will make you hurt.”

This thought is a splinter in Mike’s mind as he pours another drink and watches his wife, his sweetest friend walk away. He wants to love her, but he just doesn’t want to make it rain anymore…or what if he can’t? Do they love him or his accomplishments?

He has a choice. Face the fear or pour another drink.

Courage can only exist where fear is present
